Overview: What InfiniShare Means to You

Over the course of the 30 minute webinar, Horan discussed the role that the InfiniShare feature plays in terms of traditional file sharing. File sharing in general allows for an authenticated user (meaning someone who logs into FTP Today with a username and password) to share files and folders with other authenticated users.

InfiniShare takes things one step further by allowing those same authenticated users to share files with third parties by creating InfiniShare links. InfiniShare links are specifically signed URLs containing a unique security token that are associated with a package of one or more downloadable files.

Even if someone does not currently use FTP Today, they can still receive an InfiniShare link to download one or more files from the system. This can be a great way to increase productivity and share files with colleagues in other businesses or even with clients without requiring admins to create a new username and password for them.

    InfiniShare Security Controls

As with other aspects of FTP Today, the company has included a wide range of security controls to help make sure that InfiniShare links are not exploited in any way. Site administrators first decide if InfiniShare capabilities are enabled on their FTP site account. Once InfiniShare is activated, people who need to be able to create InfiniShare links to more adequately do their jobs will be allowed to.

Admins also have complete control over the link expiration. They can decide how long each link is valid, in days, so that the link will automatically expire once a predetermined amount of time has passed. The recommended setting here is 7 days, though admins may choose as few as 1 day for this timed expiration.

Administrators also control the total number of times a link can be used, meaning that they can specify a set number of downloads that can take place before a link will expire automatically regardless of the time passed. A recommended setting of 1 time will prevent InfiniShare links from being used more than once.

Finally, administrators can also control whether or not users have the ability to override the aforementioned security controls. If allowed, users will be able to set their own expiration dates and total number of times a link can be used. Staff members can thus be empowered with these capabilities so that is one less thing the security team has to worry about.
